The project

What is Borderlive Europe?

Borderlive Europe is a participatory project focused on the external borders of the European Union.

It allows individuals to visit these borders in person and record their presence by adding a location, a photo or video, and a short written note.

All contributions are displayed on a shared digital map, creating a collective record of visits along the EU's outer edge.

What defines the project

  • External borders of the European Union
  • Real, physical visits
  • User-generated content and locations
  • A shared public map of all visits

Your position is verified by GPS and your entry becomes part of the shared public map.

Minimal paper-style map of Europe

The map

The border map

The map is the central element of the project.

The first view presents a clean visual overview of the EU's external border. As you explore, the map reveals a detailed, interactive layer of every recorded visit — the growing archive of those who have been there.

What the map displays

  • The external border of the EU
  • Official points — a structured reference system
  • User-created points along the border
  • Every entry: location, photo or video, and note

Two kinds of points

Types of points

The project includes two types of points, side by side — a structured grid and the places worth stopping for.

Predefined

Official points

Thousands of predefined locations placed along the border at regular intervals, combined with a curated selection of landmarks — lighthouses, fortresses, beaches, and cultural sites. Each official point is part of a structured reference system. Visit one, and your entry is linked to it.

Yours to create

User points

If the place you want to document is not on the map, you can create your own point. User points can be added anywhere within a narrow corridor along the border. Your point, your entry, your record.

A quiet distinction

First visitor rule

Every official point has a first visitor.

The first recorded visit to a point remains permanently linked to that location. It cannot be replaced, overwritten, or taken away.

Important information

Borderlive Europe covers the external borders of the European Union. This includes both land and coastal sections, from the Baltic to the Atlantic, from the Mediterranean to the Arctic.

Participants are responsible for organising their own travel, respecting local laws, and understanding that photography or video recording may be restricted in some border areas. When in doubt, check local regulations before you record.

What is not included

  • Internal EU borders (between member states)
  • Border zones within active conflict areas
  • Restricted military or security locations
